CHEMICAL DIVERSITY

Microbial metabolites represent an unimaginably vast array of chemical structures. Microbes don't just produce one metabolite, usually they produce 1 to 10 major metabolites as well as literally hundreds of minor metabolites. These metabolites are thought to play a role in mediating the dynamic interactions between microorganisms. It is this implicit biological activity that is the driving force behind the success of drug discovery with microbial biodiversity.

The diversity of natural product extracts can be a mixed blessing. Many of today's bioassays are so sensitive that complex mixtures can mask actives or alternatively cause high incidences of false positives. Fractionation reduces the complexity of crude extracts and produces enriched fractions to match the strengths of your bioassays and your project time-lines.

At Microbial Screening we recognise the need to tailor the chemical diversity in microbes to the needs of screening programmes. We offer:
  • extracts of microbial mycelia, agar cultures and freeze dried "beers" as the unrefined total products of fermentation.
  • fraction libraries of culture extracts enriched by SPE (solid phase extraction), solvent partitioning or droplet counter-current chromatography tuned to desired physico-chemical properties.
  • more highly refined preparative HPLC fractionated libraries which offer diverse secondary metabolites in a near pure state.
  • Individual fractions which can be supplied in bulk vials (100 mg to 10 g) or in microtitre plate arrays ready for use. All samples are supported by sufficient bulk material to allow follow-up chemistry.
Microbial Screening's own discovery efforts have generated a library of more than 500 secondary metabolite classes from actinomycetes and fungi as pure compounds. The selection of these microbial natural products listed below is an indication of the chemical diversity available in our culture library.
